Coming on the heels of my successful recent series, Reversible, I wanted to continue exploring the possible ways that boys can become girls. Enter Riley Price, a high school senior and varsity soccer player from Chandler, Arizona. It is the end of his final semester and Riley has one week before finals and graduation before heading off to Arizona State University as a freshman. Like many high schools, Hampton High hosts a Senior Week, a chance for the senior class to blow off steam in a week of light-hearted theme days before ending their tenure as kings and queens of the high school hallways. The week is filled with dress-up events, culminating in Friday’s Gender Day.

Reluctantly, Riley agrees to participate. He hits his sister up for some clothes and for tips on playing dress-up. Jenn loans him a skirt and a top that fits. He borrows a bra and stuffs himself into his costume. At the last minute, Riley finds a little red purse that will be the perfect finishing piece for his day as a girl. Oddly, the little red handbag is filled with everything he needs. He finds lipstick and cosmetics in inlaid silver cases that seem both old and mystical. Surely, the stuff can’t still be fresh enough to use, right? Opening the case, Riley discovers that everything is fresh and brand new.

When Riley finds a pair of silver earrings molded with transgender symbols, he clips them onto his earlobes and his strange day begins. Strange compulsions to apply lipstick and mascara come over him, much to the dismay of his best friends. Fellow students begin posting images of Riley to their social media pages, including a TikTok of him, entranced as he stares into his mystical silver compact and dresses his face in blush and eye shadow. By the second period, he is noticing changes in his body. By lunch, he is convinced he is becoming a girl.

As his life changes, the Little Red Purse starts to bend his reality to match his new status as a cute high school girl.
